Eighteen months have passed since the disastrous Winter Festival and the horror that happened there. Hellen has spent that time trying to rid the world of Dagge's monsters. He got smart, hiding them better while he took over surrounding nations. The few left are in Great Hand, and she's come home to finish her job.

The bitter taste of John's death still haunts the Resistance. And motivates them. Adia's been leading her people on a course of creative sabotage: "faulty wiring" in the barracks; exploding carapaz in the mine; delayed deliveries and time-consuming repairs. So many ways a girl can ruin Tomius Dagge's day. It slows the tyranny machine, but not enough. She's missed Hellen. Occasional stories of mysterious deaths are the only news they'd get of her progress. As much as she tries not to worry, if Adia didn't have Wolf, she'd be insane.
